Working alongside colleagues from the University of Manchester, the University of Liverpool and the British Geological Survey, Badley Ashton’s Dr. Catherine Breislin has had a paper published in ‘the Depositional Record’. Entitled “Mechanisms controlling the localisation of fault-controlled hydrothermal dolomitisation, Derbyshire Platform, UK”. The study examines dolomitisation of a 60km2 area of Visean Limestone using outcrop, petrographic and geochemical analysis to better constrain the timing and mechanism for this fault-controlled dolomitisation. The study demonstrates the complex interplay between basin kinematics, host rock permeability and timing of fluid supply through seismic valving along faults that connect the carbonate platform to basin compartments, which has ultimately controlled the position of dolomite geobodies along faults, and provides a record of fluid flow during the transition from thermal subsidence to post-rift basin inversion. If you would like more information about either this paper or the entire volume, you can find more information here.
